Our Story & Sourcing

From Bean to Bar, With Intention

"Vidya means knowledge," she would say. That was her lesson — knowledge earned, not given.

Everything, from sowing to harvesting, bundling, selling, and the fallow season in between, she did with her firstborn baby beside her — not even five pounds, with only black tea to drink, because a village enemy had tied the legs of the family's one cow and left it to suffer, silently, in the river. Meanwhile, the sugar-cane haul track ran over that same warm water, carrying away tonnes of cut sugar cane — hours upon hours of back-breaking labour done at the tips of girls' fingers that should have been turning the pages of adventure books or gripping the ropes of a swing, instead gripping the handle of a machete swinging into cane in the danger of dusk and the dark of a rural tropical farm.

The cane made its months-long journey by ship to faraway lands, bringing back seven dollars to the village. On arrival, royalty settled into their afternoon tea time, scooping and pouring each white grain of refined sugar into their black tea, stirring gently, not missing a speck of the angel dust of the 1940s.

So when does Vidya get to play, to learn, to absorb and share knowledge fully? When does Vidya get to put her feet up on an ottoman and pour grains of her own sugar into her own cup of black tea?

This chocolate is for you — to savour and enjoy every morsel, every scent, every bead of sweat, every moment of hard work, brought back into your body to serve you. For a moment in time: of peace, of tranquility, of taste, of justice.

It is about reclaiming our past — the hard work and labour of our ancestors. It is about savouring the literal fruits of that labour, refusing to be seen only as units of it, and choosing instead to be stewards: of land, of plants, of animals, of water and air, of dreamers, of community care, of community healing, of generational actions and reactions that will reverberate long after we are gone. It is about pausing the chaos. About smelling, tasting, feeling, experiencing the pure and unbroken joy of cocoa — a moment created, whole, with Vidya Chocolate.

Indulge. Share. Celebrate. Indulge. Celebrate. Share. Pause. Indulge. Celebrate. Share.

Vidya Chocolate was born out of a simple but powerful belief: that chocolate can tell a story. Not just any story — the story of a place, a farmer, a harvest. Every bar we make is a direct line between the hands that grew the cacao and the hands that hold the chocolate.

We make our chocolate in small batches right here in Vancouver, BC. We use cacao sourced directly from growers around the world. We keep our process intentional and our relationships personal.

Where Our Cacao Comes From

We source cocoa beans from some of the world's most remarkable cacao-growing regions. Each origin carries its own character, shaped by soil, climate, and the care of the people who tend it.

Uganda — Bold, fruity notes with a deep earthiness from the lush highlands near the Rwenzori Mountains.

Colombia — Bright and complex, with floral and red fruit notes from biodiverse farms in the Andean foothills.

Haiti — Rich and rustic, with a story of resilience. Supporting Haitian cacao means supporting farming communities rebuilding with pride.

Belize — Nutty and smooth, from one of the oldest cacao-growing traditions in the Americas, rooted in Mayan heritage.

Puerto Rico — Rare and aromatic, from a cacao revival movement bringing fine-flavour beans back to the island.

We choose our origins carefully — not just for flavour, but for the values behind the farm. We look for growers who care about their land, their communities, and the quality of what they produce.

Small-Batch, Made in Vancouver

Once the cacao arrives, we take it slow. We roast, crack, winnow, grind, and refine each batch by hand — a process that can take days. We don't rush it. The flavour is in the patience.

Making chocolate in small batches means we can pay close attention to every step. It means we can honour the farmers' work by doing justice to their beans. And it means every bar you open is genuinely one of a kind.

Why Single-Origin Matters

Most commercial chocolate blends cacao from many sources to achieve a consistent, neutral flavour. We do the opposite. By keeping each origin separate, we let the unique character of each bean shine through — and we keep the story of where it came from intact.

When you taste a Vidya bar, you're tasting a specific time and place. That's the whole point.
